1: What is a loft conversion?

A loft conversion is the transformation of the existing roof or attic
space into habitable living accommodation.
2: Why are loft conversions
such a good idea?
You could be sitting under a hidden asset that has never seen the light
of day. At the moment it may only be used as a general junk room or
somewhere to store old boxes. Yet with the help of our professional
expertise, your loft could be transformed into versatile living space
adding value to your home.
3: How much disruption will
there be to the rest of the house?
Some disruption may be experienced - depends on the chosen position
for the staircase/stairwell cut-out. The stairwell is usually cut out
midway through the project.
4: How messy/dusty will the
work be?
Although some dust may be expected, with care it can be minimised and
contained to specific areas. Careful positioning of dust sheets will
minimise the mess.
5: Will the loft room be as
warm/cool as the rest of the property?
As long as the insulation is to specification and correctly installed,
the loft could be insulated better than some 1900 - 1930 properties.
6: How long will the work take?

This will usually take around 30 - 35 working days.
7: Will there be any problems
with planning permission/neighbours?
For a room within the existing roof space only, planning permission
is not required - but it would be polite to keep the neighbours informed.
8: What about means of escape
in case of a fire?
An escape window will be fitted into the loft room to comply with current
building regulations. Building Regulation Section B Appendix B.
9: What type of smoke detectors
will be fitted?
Smoke detectors are compulsory when converting your loft into a living
space, and a mains powered smoke alarm with battery back up should be
fitted, interlinked to all levels of the property.
10: Will I need any special
tools?
Some special tools will make the job easier and faster - you may already
have some of these - some may be worth buying, borrowing or hiring just
for the project.
11: Will I need any specialist
skills?
Depends on your own skills and available friends!
12: Could I have a bare brick
finish or pine board finish in the loft?
Bare brick finish will work only if the condition of the current brickwork
is good, it can then be cleaned and sealed. Pine boards are also nice
but will have to be tongue and groove and a minimum of 22mm thick, to
conform to fire regulations.
13: Who will arrange my plans
and planning permission?
Rest assured, we can put you in contact with local contacts.
14: Can I see a completed
conversion?
Yes, we carry an extensive portfolio of completed conversions in photographic
form.
15: Can all lofts be converted?

Not all lofts can be converted, in some cases it may be impractical
or too expensive. This is particularly so on houses built in the 1960's
or after.
